MOSQUITOES

by Kent Neilsen

Mosquitoes are blood sucking insects. They are pests and can carry infectious diseases.

Mosquitoes need blood to complete fertilization of their eggs. Mosquitoes infect humans by first feeding on an infected bird and then feeding secondly on a human, thus inoculating one of us!

Mosquitoes need still or stagnant water in which to lay their eggs. They can lay thrie eggs in less than one ounce of water. Anything that can hold water for seven days is a potential breeding site!

Ponds with fish are still a potential breeding site. Eggs may be laid on vegetation and lava may use that vegetation to hide from fish.

Other potential sites: Eves troughs, old tires, sump pumps, external pond pumps, bird baths, plants (bromeliads), holes in trees, rain gutters, tin cans and even decaying fruit.
You must be diligent inspecting your property. Look under decks, under bushes and under flower pots.
